Painting an oak cabinet without sanding might sound too good to be true, but with the right approach, it is certainly possible. Discover how to easily give your cabinet a new look and what to look out for to achieve a sleek and durable result.

What you need for this tutorial;

Painting an oak cabinet without sanding? Yes, it’s possible! With the right preparation and products, you can give your cabinet a completely new look without sanding or needing a primer. Ideal for old furniture you want to give a second life. In this tutorial, you will learn the best way to tackle this using Osmo Decorwax Creativ.

Preparation: remove old layers

Before you start painting, it is important that the wood is properly prepared. The adhesion of the new paint layer depends entirely on the condition of the surface. Even if you want to paint without sanding, preparation remains crucial.

Remove old paint or oil finish
Use the Osmo Paint Stripper for this. This powerful paint stripper has been specially developed for removing old layers of paint, oil, or lacquer from wood, both indoors and outdoors.

How to use the Osmo Paint Stripper:

  1. Stir well; do not dilute.
  2. Apply generously with a brush or spatula.
  3. Immediately cover the surface with a thin sheet of plastic and allow it to soak in sufficiently – this can vary from a few minutes to several hours.
  4. Check periodically with a trowel to see if the paint is loosening.
  5. Remove the softened, dissolved layer with a trowel at the optimal moment.
  6. Rinse the surface with (preferably warm) water. Please note:
  7. Always test on a small piece of wood first and protect plastic parts or plants well while working.
  8. This step-by-step guide is intended only for wooden furniture, such as an oak cabinet. Not suitable for furniture with a plastic or laminated top layer.

Step-by-step plan for treating an oak cabinet

Now that the wood is properly prepared, you can get started with Osmo Decorwax Creativ. Follow this step-by-step guide for a smooth result with an opaque effect.

1

Stir the product well

After opening the can, you must stir the product well for 2 minutes. The oil and wax can separate, so thorough mixing is essential. Always test on a small piece of wood first to see if the result is satisfactory.

Good after rolling

Ensure that the surface is thoroughly rolled or brushed over. This prevents too much product from remaining on the surface. Always work along the wood grain for a smooth result.

Correct any errors

Up to 30 minutes after application, you can touch up brush strokes or brush hairs as long as the product is still wet. This prevents unevenness in the final result.
